The Grec Festival de Barcelona is the city’s main event with theatre, dance, music and the circus. It is a festival with a long tradition that will reach its forty-third edition in 2019. During this time El Grec has become not only the main cultural attraction of Barcelona’s summer, but also a reference in the European calendar of festivals.
The festival takes its name from its main venue: El Teatre Grec de Montjuic, a historic venue from which a large number of activities to suit all tastes can be found on different stages around the city. One of its most dynamic proposals is the “White Bouncy Castle” at the Museo Nacional D’Art de Catalunya, a gigantic cube that takes the form of a kind of large white inflatable castle within which visitors are invited to drop and bounce. In the musical part there are international shows such as the concert of Jazz legend Scott Hamilton or the presentation of Joe Jackson, mythical representative of the New Wave.
Technology and science are very present in this edition of El Grec with shows such as “Torus” which has been conceived with the help of physicists and scholars of the structure of the stars. In the piece the technologies are applied to light and sound, fundamental elements in this creation. “The City” is another show that relies on science to communicate, in this piece, a small group of spectators sit around a kind of table that ends up being an interactive screen.
The circus is also present at the festival and makes its appearance at the Palau de la Música through the show “En Masse” with the acrobats of the Circa Contemporary Circus, a montage that takes the ten acrobats who perform the piece to the physical, psychic and spiritual limits.
El Grec is an appointment with contemporary culture through different manifestations, an accumulation of events that turn Barcelona for a few weeks into an ocean of unmissable proposals.
